Cruising on a fish net

Have you ever heard of BUREO Skateboards? No? Well, I did, so let me tell you a little bit about it.

Three guys from the U.S. just wanted to stop the pollution of the sea and the production of plastic waste. So, upcycling is the keyword. The founder Ben R. Kneepers, David M. Stover and Kevin J. Ahearn did no longer want to watch the misery of the oceans and wanted to find solutions for the growing issue of ocean plastic pollution. Discarded fish nets, the so called Ghost Nets, are responsible for an estimated 10% of the ocean´s plastic pollutions and are a major threat to marine mammals and ecosystems. The fishnets are a challenging material for the fishermen to manage and they have their problems with recycling them.

That´s the reason why these three guys make it their business to change this and to make their contribution. And this contribution just comes around with a fish tail, fish scales and The Minnow as a name. And by the way, it just feels at home on the pavement of our cities. We are talking about a cool, sustainable and up cycled cruiser skateboard made out of Ghost Nets.

Chilean fishermen can donate their fish nets in free collections bins and Bureo transports the nets via deadhead freight (trucks returning with otherwise empty loads) to a recycling and manufacturing facility in Santiago. Right there the fish nets are shredded and through injection-molding the nets are made into skateboards.

But why Chile? This is just because Knepper worked there as environmental consultant in 2012 and recognized the exorbitant amount of plastic pollution destroying the beautiful coastline. So, with a lifelong passion for surfing and the environment, the Bureo team just created a beautiful and cool cruiser for our summer.

Last but not least, what does Bureo actually mean?
The name ‘Bureo’ comes from the language of the Mapuche, the native Chileans, and means ´the waves’. Selected in honor of the Chilean people, the name represents our mission. Just as a wave originates from a disturbance of wind along the ocean surface, Bureo is starting with a small change in an ocean of plastic. Through time and energy, the waves of Bureo will develop the force required to cause real change”, the guys are explaining the name.

So just get out and enjoy the warmer days and cruise down the streets with a good conscious.

a blog so I can easily share my own experience and thoughts online.
